Issue Position

I am a strong supporter of local government. While serving on the Vigo County Council a few years ago, I learned the wisdom of being fiscally conservative. The notion that much of local government is corrupt or incompetent is simply untrue. When voters elect local people they hold them accountable for their decisions. It has always been my thought that I would rather decide within my own community to give police officers, firefighters, and teachers raises rather than have an agency 70 miles away in Indianapolis that knows nothing about what is good for the community to make those decisions for us. Another often overlooked fact is that municipal governments employ thousands of local people across the state giving them the opportunity to support their families, support local businesses, and contribute to the local economy. I consider the government which is closest to the people to be the best form of government.
